2016 03 18 Stem Walls Poured ..
Weather was beautiful for concrete pouring, or anything else, today.
The concrete pump was there by 8:30, concrete trucks started arriving at 10:30. Concrete was done starting on the east end of the house with the utility room walls, which were initially half filled. The stem walls around the deck were done next, and then the utility room walls were filled. This was done because the utility room walls are almost 10 feet, and time is needed to allow the initial concrete to start to set before the rest is done. If the concrete at the bottom of the walls is not partially set the pressure on the forms would be too great.
After that they worked their way around the various walls, moving from east to west.
By about 2:00 everything was done except one last small section of wall in front of the garage, which had to be done "manually". There was not quite enough concrete in the last truck to do it all. I was told 127 yards were ordered (13 trucks, with the last only 7 yards), when really 129 or 130 were needed. That last bit was done by 3:00. It goes fast, but is intense very hard work.
There is a shot at the end of this sequence where the workers are pushing on the forms. They have pulled a taut string along the exact desired outer edge of the wall, and are making fine adjustments in the positions of the forms while they are filled with concrete. This takes a lot of effort, but makes the wall dead straight. They did this to quite a few of the outer walls, where they will be visible.
